Brothers Antonio and Joey Civitella started their business by helping their neighbors, family and friends make dump runs. Today, they own a junk removal company, 1-800 Mr Junker, with a recycling facility and retail store.
In 2010 Antonio Civitella, then a 17-year-old St. Joseph High School student, began his snow plowing business. When spring arrived many of his customers called him back to their homes to clean out basements and attics. As word spread, a new business was born — 1-800 Mr Junker. A bigger truck and a younger brother Joseph came on board, and weekends were spent hauling junk and frequent dump runs.
Antonio began to notice that a lot of his “haul” was not necessarily junk. Their father Pasquale Civitella agreed a lot of the items could be re-purposed, recycled and reused. The Civitellas began sorting and taking inventory of what they were picking up. They began advertising their “green” service on TV, radio and newspaper, and one truck lead to two. Pasquale began renting containers to store the various discarded items, such as TVs, appliances, furniture, antiques, gas grills and tools.
Their company covers all of New Haven and Fairfield counties, offering bulk cleanouts/trash/junk removal. They will come in and clean out homes, garages, basements, attics or backyard of any debris or “good stuff.” They also take the good, bad and ugly junk away and they even have a recycling facility in Derby, where they recycle up to 90% of everything they pick up.
The Civitellas donate to local charities, such as My Sister’s Place in Ansonia, and Helping Hands in New Haven and Orange. Pasquale Civitella said they are the only junk removal company that has their own retail outlet store and their own recycling center. Their retail outlet is located at 116 Bridgeport Avenue, Milford, and they sell furniture, antiques and other household items. A new store is slated to open on Roosevelt Drive in spring 2013. Proceeds are donated back to the local community.
As a partner, Pasquale Civitella scouted numerous locations for six months until he decided to open the Milford store, which is open seven days a week. The inventory changes weekly, coming from as far north as Stonington and Glastonbury, and as far south as Manhattan — with occasional repeat jobs in New Jersey.
Mr Junker offers the senior citizen discounts, free junk car removal, free labor, $99 one-item special, free scrap metal pickup in local area and they broom clean after each job.
